Week Five | Near the Jungle?? Wherever the treehouse is | Sunday (post execution)
[ Here they are, at their not-quite-a-secret clubhouse (minus one Austria, bless her soul). Jinah took it upon herself precariously stack some rocks with one especially large and flat one at the top so they have a sort of wobbly table to sit at. ]
I don't really know if any of it is as interesting as you think it might be.
[ She's talking about the Jacopo debacle obviously. Just talking about it brings an annoyed sort of expression to her features. ]
Stupid Jacopo, he just had to say something.

Stupid Jacopo, he just had to say something.

Which means, of course, she's seated at their "table," leaning forward a little with her elbows on the flat surface, propping up her head with her hands.]
If it wasn't going to be interesting, then why did he say something? Those were some of his last words, you know? So whatever he wanted you to remember, it must have been important to him!
...how long have the two of you been close, anyway?
no subject
I don't know if I would say we were close. But we had an.. understanding.
[ She shrugs, sort of raising her arms in a 'I don't know' gesture. ]
Men like him.. they're of a certain era you know? They don't let anyone really get close to them, it's so stupid-- they try so hard to seem so strong.
[ Yona probably doesn't know since she's from ye olde times, but that's the only way she can describe it. ]
And of course he had to go and make a big scene like that.. jeez.
no subject
Jacopo was sort of a... strange person. [That's putting it mildly. Yona's stomach churns, because it's that strangeness that got so many people to vote for him, probably (although she's sure a lot of it was people being suspicious but not wanting to vote for Laphicet, too), and that's not really his fault, but...]
...but he was one of the people who hasn't killed anyone since we got here. And... since we know he wasn't killing anyone, the things that seemed so suspicious at the trial... they don't really seem all that suspicious anymore. It was his way of helping.
...
Do you mind if I ask what you two had an understanding about?
no subject
Well first of all strange doesn't even begin to describe him-- [ For once it's Jinah saying the rude things Yona is thinking and not the other way around. ]
But I guess that's why we.. got along? Though I don't know if that's the right word either but..
[ for the first time she looks a little sad ]
I guess the things in my head that other people here wouldn't understand.. those things didn't feel as bad or weird when I was talking to him.
no subject
What kind of things?
[Yona tilts her head to one side, looking at Jinah with some concern as her expression becomes sadder.]
I may not understand them, but... I can try to. I don't want you to have to feel bad or weird just because he isn't here.
no subject
[ She sort of grumbles, playing with the little braid in her hair as she looks at anything but Yona. ]
But I appreciate it.. it's just. Do you remember that very first week.. when I asked you if any of this was real? I struggled a lot with that at first-- trying to understand if any of this was really happening, whether it was a dream or something else.
[ she pauses, briefly. ]
He understood that a little. We talked about that sort of thing a lot! It was one of the last things we talked about.. and it was right here actually.
no subject
Well, it was her hideout first, so Yona supposes she doesn't actually have any right to be surprised, but... it's still a little surprising, regardless. Especially since Jinah is so grumbly whenever she talks about him.
Maybe that's just how she shows her love.]
If he understood that... then it sounds like the two of you had at least a little bit in common.
no subject
She makes that 'I just smelled something foul' face again, but it's gone soon enough. ]
I mean.. I guess? It's funny you know someone told me once that I have bad taste in men and the ones I choose to trust. Jacopo certainly falls under that category.
[ a pause. ]
Or I guess maybe it's not that funny, since the person who told me was one of those bad men to begin with.
no subject
[It means they have some level of self-awareness, at least.
Which is more than can be said for some men.]
Anyway, I don't think it's anyone's place to critique who someone likes. You love who you love and that's all there is to it.
no subject
L-Love has nothing to do with anything here!
[ She brushes off some invisible dust on her skirt, not looking at Yona. ]
If it will keep you from making assumptions like that, Jacopo and I had a deal okay? Both of us.. we've both died before, and weren't afraid of dying again. But we both really wanted our partners to live-- so we made a deal, we'd find the person who can switch partners and if anyone ever tried to blame them [ Vriska and Laphicet. ] for anything we'd bring suspicion onto ourselves.
[ A sigh. ]
Not that it mattered-- since he's gone now.

[...boo, that's boring. Yona wanted to hear a good love story. :( Let her live vicariously through you since she can't marry her cousin, Jinah...]
...that was really kind of you. Of both of you.
[Obviously it didn't work out that way - but was it because the timing just didn't work out, or...?]
Were... you ever able to find the person who had that role? I think the Chiefs said they can only do what they do on... Mondays, right? So if you found them any time before the trial, there wouldn't have been enough time...
no subject
Well.. you know how Vriska is. The island has been pretty split about her since the beginning, and as far as Laphicet goes-- no one really wanted to vote for him but everyone was willing to vote for Jacopo.
[ She looks a little torn, so she doesn't speak for a moment. ]
We never found out who it was and our timing was a little off, but if we could have found who it was we could have worked around all that. By.. I don't know, defending them during a trial and putting all of this to work the week after? Vriska's allies are getting more and more scarce but I think even the people who don't like her can acknowledge she has good ideas.. she's gotten by because of that.
[ a sort of sheepish smile. ]
I'm not really useful in this place, but if I could do something to make sure that the island doesn't lose her for something as silly as how she expresses herself-- then I would do it.
no subject
I like Vriska a lot. I... didn't think I would, at first. We didn't get along.
[She looks thoughtful for a few long moments as she tries to figure out what she wants to say, and how she wants to say it.]
But she's been trying really hard, too, in her own way. And it's not a way that everyone understands, or that everyone even wants to understand, but... I do believe she wants to help us.
...look out for her, okay? She needs people to stand by her.
no subject
[ it's probably not the love story Yona wanted to hear but.. ]
You know the bad men I was talking about? Sometimes.. Sometimes I'm not sure if they were always bad or if I made them that way. Whatever it is I seem to have really bad luck when it comes to the people I care about-- so I want to keep Vriska safe.. if I can do anything at all.
